On this St. Patrick's Day each year we talk a lot about 'Luck of the Irish'.  Even the person beside me in my morning networking meeting mentioned how today was a lucky day and he was going to win one of the door prize giveaways.  He didn't, but I did so maybe he passed a little luck my way.

In business, people may claim others are lucky or may dismiss the idea of luck all together. Here are five ways we can increase our odds at being lucky?
5 Ways To Improve Your Luck

1. Be Open to Opportunities

“Ability is of little account without opportunity.” – Napoleon Bonaparte

Opportunities rarely come knocking at your door.  Even the winner of Publisher's Clearing House winners had to send in multiple entries and subscribe to numerous of publications to get to the big check.

If you lay the groundwork, and prepare for opportunities to come your way, when they do you will be ready. Be proactive.

2. Make Connections

“I’m a greater believer in luck, and I find the harder I work the more I have of it” – Thomas Jefferson

How much luck do you think you can look forward to if you stay locked up in your house like a hermit? Probably not much. Lucky, people know people, lots of people. They don't have to be everyone's best friend, but your luck improves as you open yourself up to many new people.

3. Visualize You Win

"You miss 100 percent of the shots you don't take." - Wayne Gretzky

The best athletes see themselves winning a game long before it starts. Think about your goals every day. Imagine what success will look like, and work backward to figure out how you will get there. If you can't visualize luck, you may never know when it is standing at your door.

4. Act on Your Opportunities

“Luck is a matter of preparation meeting opportunity.” – Lucius Annaeus Seneca

Often times luck is just a matter of moving forward with your idea, passion or opportunity.  You will never find luck with should-haves and would-haves.

Every opportunity may not result in 'luck', but if you don't try you will never know if luck was right there just waiting for you to act.

5. Celebrate Your Luck, but Don't Take it for Granted

“Luck is a dividend of sweat. The more you sweat, the luckier you get.” – Ray Kroc

Celebrate your wins, record them and use them for inspiration to move forward.

One of the most surprising things I've learned is how little we actually remember of our own lives. Regardless of how you do it, recording the pieces of your life allows you to chart what you've done successfully and reminds you to follow up on opportunities.

So on this luckiest of all days, let's go out and make some luck.
