An interview for employment is the opportunity for the job seeker to display their skills and experience to their potential employer. Rather than thinking of it as an interview, look at it as an audition for the job and somewhat a sample of your work. Unfortunately, some job seekers walk into interviews believing it is simply a formality before they begin their first day. Here are tips on what to do before, during, and after a job interview:
1) Learn all necessary and important information once invited to scheduled interview
Displaying a little bit of knowledge about the company not only shows your interest in the company, but it gives a sense to the interviewer that you have already begun to take the job position and company serious.
Be sure to request the names and job titles of each of the people who will be interviewing you. Exhibiting a little bit of knowledge about the interviewer’s professional background can help make an outstanding first impression.
Be sure to ask interviewers questions. Many do not see this part of the interview as important, but this is imperative to the interview process. Similarly to displaying knowledge about the company, asking questions regarding the company and the position shows general interest as well as a tool to engage in more interaction with the interviewer.
2) Arrive on time dressed the part for the company and position interviewing for
Company culture and expectations differ across the board. Depending on what company and position you are applying for should determine your attire for the interview.
When it comes to the hair of women for interviews, wearing it either down or pulled back is both acceptable. Hair must be neatly groomed and not too distracting if worn down. If any ladies experience a bad hair day on the day of the interview, it is totally fine to pull your hair back into a neat ponytail to avoid any frustration and distractions your hair my cause.
Men should always arrive clean cut to interviews. Although beards have been traditionally not accepted in the workplace, a recent shift has occurred in the corporate world and full beards have become more common. If your beard is not completely full and neatly groomed, males should completely shave their facial hair for the interview.
“If you are five minutes early, you are already ten minutes late.” said the late great Vince Lombardi. Arriving 15 minutes prior to your scheduled interview is ideal. This allows you time to fill out any preliminary paperwork before the interview as well as allow yourself to settle in and mentally prepare once more before the interview begins.
3) Follow-up after interview is complete
After the actual interview is complete ask for business cards from each of your interviewers. If they do not have any to offer, try researching them on LinkedIn to gain a way of contacting them.
Be sure to send a thank you letter or email message to everyone who interviewed you. Your thank you message should be sent within 24 hours of the interview. The message should include why you are qualified for the position as well as clarification on anything you may have misspoken on during the interview and always be sure to proofread before sending.
