As a daughter, granddaughter and employer of a veteran I can say hiring a veteran makes good business sense.  The military teaches and instills in its service personnel skills that are both valuable and desirable to American businesses.

No matter your personal feelings about the U.S.'s involvement of international conflicts; men and women who volunteer to serve their country come with a different level of commitment.  One that for those of us who have not served, did not make.

Here is why hiring a vet makes good business sense.
Why Hiring A Veteran is Good For Business

Show-up mentality

If you are sent off to a war zone, a location of civil unrest or an area that has been ravaged by a natural disaster, you must 'show-up.'  A veteran didn't just go to work, they Showed-Up. They must be present, active, engaged, think on their feet, take orders, but also show leadership.  We often think that our US military as arrogant, but our veterans are required to show a great amount of humility which can go a long way in any situatlion.

If you want an employee is will not only be present, but be activate, follow instructions while thinking on their feet and be a leader, hire a veteran.

Regimented

From boot camp on, the military teachers order, timeliness, organization and following protocol.
There is comfort that is found knowing that an employee can both follow the rules and think on their feet.

Most veterans have been through more stressful situations than we as civilians will ever encounter.  They learn how to asses a situation and quickly prioritize. While most offices will not need such high-skill it's nice to know your employee and prioritize and complete a task on deadline.

Sacrifice

Making a large sacrifice will change you.  It's obvious that putting your life on the line is one sacrifice veterans make, but there are others.  Time away from family, friends and having a personal life.  Even when they are off work, they are still on.  Those weekend luxuries of watching a football game, going to your kid's soccer game, even just walking your dog, don't exist during deployment.

Another sacrifice is pay.  Yes there are stipends, but most of our military personnel are underpaid for the work that they do.  Even high ranking officials are not paid a salary that would be comparable to a similar job in the civilian world.  Even as pay increases during deployment it still is not equal to the risk and sacrifice being given.

It's American

We all benefit from the sacrifies our military personnel have made.  Our service men and women put their life on the line for our country, therefore it is our duty to ensure that they are cared for once their service is complete.  As business owners this includes hiring a veteran.

Not only is this an American thing to do, it is smart for business.  The military provides skills that are not found in higher- learning institutions.  Beyond organization and respect, our veterans have seen the worst and the best of humanity.  They have been required to know the rules, follow the rules, know when to lead and when to follow.  They are often times better thinkers, leaders and employees.  In a crisis situation, they are the ones to turn to as they handle multiple tasks at once and can prioritize quickly.

Even if you are not in a position to hire a veteran, thank them for their service.  What they do allows me to write this blog and own my women-owne
